| In Japan, everyone is required to join either the National Health Insurance
Program or the Workers’ Health Insurance Program. The Workers’ Health Insurance Program is a plan whereby employees are insured through their employers. Foreign residents who plan on staying in Japan for one year or longer are also required to join the National Health Insurance Program. When you join the program, you will receive a National Health Insurance Certificate and must pay a premium. When you submit your National Health Insurance Certificate to a medical facility for treatment, you only need to pay 30% of the medical costs (those applicable). When an insured person gives birth or dies or when high nursing care costs are incurred, specified amounts of benefits are provided. For more information, contact the Health Insurance and Pension Division of your city. How much do you need to pay? |
